Buying electronics online: what to check first

Most electronics disappointments come from three things that are easy to check before paying: the exact model and region, the condition the seller actually means, and the total cost once shipping and import charges are added. This guide covers the checks we would make ourselves for the products people search for most in this category.

Headphones and earbuds

Decide first whether you need active noise cancelling (ANC). It is the main reason a pair costs USD 150–350 rather than USD 30–80, and it only matters on commutes, flights or in open offices. For calls, look for reviews of the microphone specifically; many good-sounding headphones have weak mics.

Phones and tablets

Confirm the exact model number, storage and that the device is unlocked. A phone sold for one country can miss mobile bands used in another, so compare the model's band list with your operator. If you live in Türkiye, a phone brought in from abroad must have its IMEI registered and a fee paid before it works on local networks; include that in the price you compare.

Laptops, smartwatches and speakers

For laptops, check the keyboard layout in the photos, the exact processor generation and whether the charger is included; most modern chargers accept 100–240 V, but the plug may need an adapter. For smartwatches, make sure the watch pairs with your phone's operating system. For speakers, water resistance (IPX7 or higher) matters more outdoors than peak wattage.

Condition, seller and total cost

On marketplaces such as eBay, read the condition note, the return policy and the seller's feedback score before the price. A seller with thousands of ratings and 98 % or more positive feedback is a very different risk from a new account. The price shown on a listing is not the final cost: shipping, and for buyers outside the seller's country, import duty and VAT, are added at checkout. Where the checkout estimates import charges, compare that total, not the headline price.

How this page works

Products from our own partner feeds appear first, in our usual order. Live eBay listings are shown in a separate, labelled section in eBay's own order; commission never changes either order. Prices come from the store at the time shown, and the store page has the final word.
