Buying for the home and garden: measure, check the plug, read the material

Home and garden products disappoint for practical reasons: the sofa does not fit through the door, the kettle has the wrong plug, the pan does not work on an induction hob. None of this shows in a product photo, and all of it can be checked in a few minutes before you pay. Here is what to look at.

Measure first

For furniture, measure the space and the way in: doorways, stairs, lift and corners. A listing's dimensions are usually width × depth × height of the assembled item; check whether it ships assembled or flat-packed. For rugs and curtains, measure the floor or window and decide how much overlap you want before you look at sizes.

Electrical items: plug, voltage and safety marks

Small appliances from abroad may come with a plug for another country and may be built for a different voltage: North America uses about 120 V, most of Europe and Türkiye about 230 V. An adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage, so a 120 V-only kettle is not safe on a 230 V socket. Check the voltage range on the listing and look for the safety marking used in your market, such as CE or UKCA in Europe and UL or ETL in North America.

Kitchen and materials

Cookware for an induction hob must be magnetic; if a fridge magnet sticks to the base, it works. Stainless steel marked 18/10 or 304 resists rust well. Non-stick pans last longer on medium heat and without metal utensils. For storage containers and anything that touches food, look for a food-safe statement, and for glass, check whether it is oven- or freezer-safe.

Garden and outdoor

Outdoor furniture lasts according to its material: powder-coated aluminium and teak handle weather best, untreated wood and thin steel need covers or storage in winter. For cordless garden tools, check whether the battery and charger are included or sold separately, since many listings show the tool alone.

How this page works

Products from our own partner feeds appear first, in our usual order. Live eBay listings are shown in a separate, labelled section in eBay's own order; commission never changes either order. Prices come from the store at the time shown, and the store page has the final word.
