Buying pet supplies: safety first, then fit, then price

With pet supplies, a cheap mistake can cost a vet visit. A toy that breaks into small pieces, a flea treatment meant for another species or a sudden change of food causes more trouble than a slightly higher price. The checks below put safety first and help you compare what is left on fit and cost.

Food

Look for a food labelled complete for your pet's species and life stage (puppy or kitten, adult, senior); complementary foods and treats are not a full diet. Change foods gradually over about a week by mixing the old and new, to avoid stomach upsets. Pets with allergies, kidney problems or weight issues need a diet chosen with a vet. Many countries restrict imports of pet food and other animal products, so food usually has to come from a seller in your own country.

Health products: species matters

Flea, tick and worming products are made for one species and one weight range. Some dog products containing permethrin are highly toxic to cats, so never use a dog treatment on a cat. Prescription medicines should come from your vet or a licensed pharmacy, not from a marketplace listing.

Toys, collars and beds

Choose toys larger than your pet's mouth can swallow and without small parts that come off; replace toys once they start to break. For collars and harnesses, measure the neck and chest with a soft tape and use the size chart; you should fit two fingers under a collar. Cats are safer with breakaway collars. For beds, measure your pet lying stretched out and add some room.

Aquariums and small animals

For aquariums, match the heater and filter to the tank volume in litres, and check whether the plug and voltage suit your country. Cages and hutches should give the animal room to stand up and move; the manufacturer's size is often the minimum, not the ideal.

How this page works

Products from our own partner feeds appear first, in our usual order. Live eBay listings are shown in a separate, labelled section in eBay's own order; commission never changes either order. Prices come from the store at the time shown, and the store page has the final word. Nothing on this page is veterinary advice.
