Power tool bundles (2026): what you are actually paying for

Battery platform and voltage, tool-only vs kit, battery capacity, brushless motors, chargers and warranty — how to price a power tool bundle and check a Black Friday combo deal.

Power tool combo kits are some of the biggest Black Friday bundles, and some of the hardest to compare: two kits can share a headline price while one includes two batteries and a charger and the other includes a single small battery. This guide shows how to break a bundle into its parts so you know what the deal is really worth to you.

The battery platform is the real purchase

Cordless tools from one brand usually share batteries within a voltage line. Once you own batteries and a charger, every later tool can be bought 'tool-only', which is much cheaper. That makes the first kit a choice of platform, not just of a drill.

Check that the platform sells the other tools you are likely to need, and whether batteries from the same brand but a different voltage line fit (usually they do not).

Tool-only versus kit

A 'tool-only' or 'bare tool' listing includes no battery and no charger. It can look like a huge discount next to a kit. Read the contents line by line: tool, number of batteries, battery capacity, charger type, case, bits.

Battery capacity, brushless motors and what you do

Higher-capacity batteries run longer but are heavier. Brushless motors are generally more efficient and durable than brushed ones and cost more. For occasional home jobs, a light kit is often enough; for regular or heavy work, runtime and a second battery matter more than extra accessories.

Price the bundle item by item

Look up the tool-only price of each tool and the price of the batteries and charger separately. If the parts add up to less than the kit, or you would not use half of the kit, the 'bundle discount' is not saving you money.

Warranty and Black Friday checks

Warranty terms can differ between tools and batteries and may require registration. Confirm the exact model numbers (holiday kits sometimes use special kit numbers), check the seller is authorised, compare price history and read the return terms for opened tools.

Method

We have not run our own tool tests. The guide uses manufacturer specifications, published manuals and the contents listed on store pages, and it tells you what to verify. Voltage and capacity figures are as stated by manufacturers. Prices on linked NextToolHub pages come from store feeds with a last-checked time and may change.

Verdict

Pick a battery platform you can grow with; later tools are cheaper as tool-only.

Compare kits by batteries, capacity and charger first, accessories last.

Add up the tool-only prices of the parts before you accept a Black Friday combo as a saving.

Questions people ask

Are batteries shared between brands?

Generally no. Batteries are made for one brand's platform and voltage line; adapters exist but may affect warranty and safety.

Is a bigger kit always better value?

Only if you will use the extra tools. Unused tools in a combo are cost, not savings.
